Yokohama Embark Noordam

Holland America Line aims to strike a balance between classic and contemporary, and Noordam, christened in 2006 and refitted in 2019 manages this well. The ship's smaller size, with fewer than 2,000 passengers, gives Noordam an intimate feel that makes it easy to meet people and make new friends. There are lots of nooks for conversation and quiet diversions like backgammon or settling back with a good book. Dinners in the main dining rooms and two specialty restaurants are leisurely. Pre-dinner entertainment includes listening to a violin-piano duo perform and dancing to ballroom and show-tune classics. Afternoon tea is served daily.

Shimizu (for Mt. Fuji)

Sail into the Port of Shimizu and you will understand why it is considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful ports. The sight of Mount Fuji soaring above the surrounding area belies the fact that Shimizu is not only a scenic area, but a culturally significant one as well. In addition to Fuji, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the area also overlooks Miho-no-Matsubara, a pine tree grove included as one of the World Heritage’s constituent properties. These assets combine with the area’s moderate climate to mark the port as one of Japan’s prime sightseeing destinations.

Osaka is one of the best cities in Japan to see spectacular cherry blossom. Head to Kema Sakuranomiya Park, where seemingly endless rows of cherry trees can be admired from the scenic riverside promenade, or Osaka Castle where you can sit and enjoy a picnic among the 4,000 cherry trees in its grounds.

Fukuoka

Fukuoka, capital of Fukuoka Prefecture, sits on the northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island. It’s known for ancient temples, beaches and modern shopping malls, including Canal City. Maizuru Park contains ruins of 17th-century Fukuoka Castle. The central Hakata district contains Tōchō-ji Temple, home to a 10m wooden Buddha and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, with displays on daily life in the Meiji and Taishō eras. Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest and one of Japan's ten most populated cities. Because of its closeness to the Asian mainland (closer to Seoul than to Tokyo).

Dalian

Dalian is known as China’s Northern Pearl and is exceptionally laid back and relaxed, except when it comes to two subjects: football and fashion! With one of the top football teams in China, there’s almost as much passion for football here as you’d find in Brazil. The city is also very proud of its sartorial credentials and hosts the International Fashion Festival every year.

Beijing (Tianjin)

The city of Beijing is overflowing with history and culture. Alive with the hustle and bustle of daily lives of the millions who live in Beijing. The Forbidden City, famed home of China’s lost Emperors is a must to see. The infamous Tienanmen Square bustles with activity while giving an atmosphere of old Soviet style grandeur. A visit to the temple of Heaven will allow you to wander around the beautiful scenic park which surrounds it and probably the greenest place in Beijing. Tours to The Great Wall of China are best arranged in advance.

Shanghai is the cool, confident face of modern China, and its energy is infectious. Go to the Bund to watch ships on the river and marvel at the huge variety of architectural styles on display, or watch the crowds go by in People’s Square. Shoppers should make a beeline for the Fabric Market, where you can have a suit or dress tailor-made for you at bargain prices. At night, explore all manner of fashionable restaurants, bars and nightclubs or just stroll through the city enjoying the spectacular neon lights.

Xiamen

Xiamen (厦门, Xiàmén), the island city formerly known in Western circles as Amoy, is emerging as southern China’s most sophisticated city. Chinese travellers have long understood the lure of its lengthy seaside promenade and European city architecture, but international ‘jetizens’ are now descending on the fun. Many use Xiamen as a stepping-off point for the much smaller island of Gulang Yu, perhaps the highlight of the entire province. Strewn with crumbling embassies, lush gardens and beaches, and hip boutique cafes and hotels, this island feels like a kind of Chinese Mediterranean, in all its wonderful oddity.

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a densely populated bayside city on the island of Luzon, which mixes Spanish colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers. Intramuros, a walled city in colonial times, is the heart of Old Manila. It’s home to the baroque 16th-century San Agustin Church as well as Fort Santiago, a storied citadel and former military prison.

Puerto Princesa is a coastal city on Palawan Island in the western Philippines. It's a base for boat trips through the massive limestone caves and underground river of the biodiverse Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Dive sites are dotted around Puerto Princesa Bay, home to long-nosed dolphins, turtles and rays. Close to the port is the 19th-century Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral.
