The plans of Ippodamos were used as guidelines for the second planning of the town in 1834. Themistocles was the first one to realize its importance for the city of Athens and to promote it to be the major port in order to replace the Faliros Bay, which was used by the Athenians until the 5th century B.C.
Mykonos. A picture-perfect Greek island town filled with whitewashed steps and cube houses with blue doors. Narrow marble-clad streets, mazes of quirky shops famed for their gold jewelry, easily accessible trips to admire the historic white windmills on the hillside. This is an ideal port to tour on foot.
Heraklion. is an ideal starting point for visitors to explore the many sights of this beautiful Greek island. Visit the Venetian Walls or the Fountain of Morosini close to the aromatic fruit and vegetable market. The shops range from chic boutiques to herb shops and souvenirs stores. Alternatively, sit in a local café or taverna and watch the world go by Greek-style!
Souda Bay is a natural harbour near the town of Souda on the coast of the Greek island of Crete. The Allied War Cemetery and the German War Cemetery are among the most popular destinations in this part of Crete. Split is a lovely historical town set against the ancient walls of Diocletian’s palace. For beautiful views of the vehicle-free Old Town, walk through the fisherman’s quarter of Varos and up the narrow stone steeped streets. The split cathedral is certainly worth a visit and the Mestrovic gallery will give you an insight into the history and architecture of this historic old town.
Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.
Rovinj. From the brightly painted buildings and fishing boats that line the seafront, to the hilltop baroque church that stands watch over the old town—it’s no wonder Rovinj is one of the most-photographed coastal towns along Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula.
Dubrovnik. Filled with ancient stone buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and fortified ramparts rising above red-tiled rooftops. Stradun is the city's focal point and main artery. Whilst Dubrovnik's streets are blessedly free of traffic. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old city remains the pride of the Republic of Croatia and houses the world’s oldest pharmacy.
