When it launched in 1999, Volendam had the highest passenger capacity in Holland America's fleet, carrying some 1,432 passengers at double occupancy. And, in a move that seems quaint now, it proved its modernity by being the first ship in the fleet to boast a dedicated internet center.
Volendam has come a long way since then -- attested by the dozens of plaques along a Deck 4 corridor, picked up from ports around the world. Through the years, dry docks added many improvements, and a late 2017 dry dock will bring more upgrades, including completing the refurbishment of every cabin bathroom.
SPECIFICATIONS
We hope you have a pleasant flight.
Rotterdam is a major port city in the Dutch province of South Holland. The Maritime Museum's vintage ships and exhibits trace the city's seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canal-side shopping and Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America. After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, the city is now known for bold, modern architecture.
At Sea You’ll always find a place to bask in the sun onboard or find the outdoor whirlpools, swimming pools and ample sun loungers, or simply relax with a book or a cocktail and enjoy the peace of the company of newfound friends.
Stavanger. Once the European Capital of Culture, the city is blessed with a compelling history and unbridled beauty. From its ancient port, the city fans out along a network of islands. Each one connected to its neighbor by an elegant bridge. In Gamle Stavanger (the historic center) artists’ workshops still occupy 18th-century houses, much as they did in years gone by.
Flaam sits at the south end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the great Sognefjord. Flaam is also the end station for the Flåm railway, the only railway in Sogn og Fjordane and connection to the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen. Thanks to the railway and the sightseeing boat to Gudvangen (as well as a large number of cruise ships), Flåm has become one of the most visited places in the Western Fjords. These deep fjords allow the largest cruise ships to enter. St. Barthélemy Island
Relax by the pool or enjoy one of the many shipboard activities, the food is fabulous not to mention the cocktails, or simply enjoy the scenery.
Alesund. You have Kaiser Wilhelm II to thank for this city’s wonder. He rebuilt his beloved gateway in Art Nouveau style after it was destroyed by fire in 1904. Lose your heart to this gem of the Nordic coast. Today, its buildings feature dreamy turrets and ornate carvings of dragons and mythical figures. Nature has played its part too, as calm waters and distant snow-capped peaks add to the charm.
Trondheim. Explore regal pomp and ceremony, Norwegian style. The wooden Stiftsgarden is the city’s official royal residence. Monarchs are still being crowned here under the Nidaros Cathedral’s spire. You can also ride the quaint streetcars, or visit the open-air folk museums. There is a working ski jump, or the famous Lokken Copper Mines.

Hammerfest. The gorgeous port of Hammerfest touts the world's northernmost city, as well as the first European city to install electric street lamps. World-class freshwater deep-sea fishing and Arctic hunting have historically taken hold here. When the cruise ships are in port, the atmosphere can be positively carnival-like. And when it is time for a bite to eat, you can choose between everything from traditional Sami food served in a Sami turf hut at Mikkelgammen, to sushi or traditional Norwegian seafood.
Honningsvag with its 2,800 inhabitants is the capital of the North Cape. Walking through Honningsvag you’ll find excellent shops, Arctic dining experiences, and other exciting activities. Check out the Perleporten Kulturhus (the local cultural center), the Once Upon A Dream art gallery, and the Artico Ice Bar. A visit to the church is highly recommended: it was the only building left standing in Honningsvåg at the end of World War II. St. Barthélemy Island

Geiranger is a village in western Norway, at the head of Geirangerfjord. The Norwegian Fjord Center has multimedia on the history of the region and its inhabitants. Part of the steep Trollstigen mountain road weaves through the village, connecting to Flydalsjuvet lookout, which has views over the fjord. The fjord’s waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters, the Suitor, and the Bridal Veil, are visible by boat. Bunbury, Australia
Bergen. Your fascinating ‘Gateway to the Fjords’ is Norway’s second-largest city, Bergen. Its maritime trade and oil industry remain vital to the economy and it’s a thriving epicenter of culture and history. Visit the old quays of Bryggen, a World Heritage Site, and the medieval wooden houses of the city’s waterfront. You can even take a peek inside the workshops of local painters, weavers, and craftsmen. Bunbury, Australia
